Thermal comfort is a central concern in occupational health, describing the conditions under which workers feel neither too cold nor too hot while performing their tasks. Several environmental and personal factors shape this perception, including air temperature, humidity, air movement, radiant temperature from surrounding surfaces, the physical demands of the work, and the clothing worn. When these variables move outside acceptable ranges, the body must work harder to maintain its core temperature, leading to fatigue, reduced concentration, and increased risk of accidents. Maintaining thermal comfort therefore supports both wellbeing and productivity, making it a routine focus of industrial hygiene assessments in workplaces that face heat or cold exposure throughout the year.

Prolonged exposure to heat stress can trigger a range of health problems, from mild issues such as cramps, rashes, and dehydration to more serious conditions like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Workers in foundries, bakeries, laundries, agriculture, construction, and similar settings are particularly vulnerable, especially when high temperatures combine with humidity, heavy protective clothing, or strenuous physical effort. Occupational hygiene programs address these risks through environmental monitoring, scheduled rest breaks, hydration protocols, ventilation and cooling solutions, and worker training on early warning signs. Engineering controls, such as shielding heat sources and improving air circulation, are typically preferred over purely administrative measures because they reduce risk at the source and protect entire workforces simultaneously rather than relying on individual behaviour.

Cold environments present their own distinct challenges, and prolonged exposure can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, numbness, and loss of manual dexterity that compromises safety. Cold stress is common in refrigerated warehouses, food processing plants, outdoor winter work, marine operations, and certain construction activities. Effective prevention considers air temperature, wind speed, and clothing insulation together, often through a standardized index that guides work-rest cycles. Recommended measures include heated rest areas, layered protective garments, reduction of drafts, task rotation, and clear procedures for responding to suspected cold-related illness. Regular medical surveillance and worker education further strengthen prevention by helping teams recognize early symptoms and respond before minor discomfort escalates into a reportable injury or long-term health consequence.

Beyond temperature, industrial hygiene addresses a broad spectrum of physical and chemical agents that influence worker health. Noise exposure is one of the most widespread hazards, capable of causing permanent hearing loss when sound levels remain elevated for extended periods. Programs typically combine workplace sound mapping, audiometric testing, hearing protection equipment, equipment isolation, and acoustic treatments such as enclosures, barriers, and mufflers. Lighting and visual comfort are equally important, since poor illumination contributes to eye strain, headaches, and accident risk, while well-designed lighting enhances both safety and performance. Vibration, whether whole-body from vehicle seats or hand-arm from power tools, is another recognized hazard that benefits from equipment selection, maintenance practices, and limiting daily exposure durations through carefully planned work schedules.

A comprehensive occupational health framework also extends to air quality, ergonomic risks, biological agents, and psychosocial factors that shape everyday working life. Industrial hygiene teams monitor dust, fumes, vapors, and bioaerosols, recommending local exhaust ventilation, respiratory protection, and substitution of hazardous substances whenever feasible. Ergonomic assessments reduce musculoskeletal disorders caused by repetitive motion, awkward postures, or heavy lifting, while psychosocial initiatives foster healthy workloads and clear communication. Supporting structures such as safety committees, emergency response plans, accident reporting procedures, and regular medical examinations help organizations move from reactive compliance toward a proactive safety culture in which prevention, measurement, training, and continuous improvement work together to protect people across every level of the enterprise.
